How Life in the Military Made me Love RC Devices
After being in the military for many years and experimenting with almost every aviation toy available in the world, it will surprise you to learn that I found remote controlled (RC) helicopters to be one of the most amazing inventions in the world.
I must admit that currently there are other cooler gadgets in the military. However, RC helicopters have earned their merit in the military according to my opinion. Although the RC ‘vehicle’ of choice is the RC jets or planes, the RC chopper has also come in handy in certain situations. I think that most people who are used to the daily stories about drone attacks will think that I am crazy.
RC Helicopters in the Military
The main reason why I very much appreciate RC choppers is because they came before the invention of the now common remote-controlled unmanned aerial vehicles. Back when I was a young private in the army, a toy RC chopper saved our lives and averted a terrorist attack. This is when I really appreciated these amazing aviation creations.
Many years ago, our platoon was stationed in the Middle East for a routine peace keeping mission. As you can imagine, such situations involve unending terror at all times. Back then, we did not have the level of technology that is enjoyed today by the military.
Our most effective resources as soldiers were our intuition, innovation, and courage. Actually, when we remember those days with my colleagues, we laugh and agree that we were the modern day Spartans. Our daily routines involved ‘sweeping’ entire sections of cities to flush out terrorists and recruiting and engaging informers among other dangerous duties.
One evening, one of my informers, a teenage boy, informed me that he had eavesdropped a plan to move explosives into a town for a major attack. The boy did not know the faces of the terrorists and he was not able to ascertain where the explosives were coming from or the house where they were being delivered. The only thing we knew is that some explosives were coming and a potentially huge attack would follow.
Using RC Copters to Spy on our Enemies
After deliberating with my unit for hours, we could not figure out what to do. Luckily, the boy came up with more news after two days.
Apparently, some of the terrorists were meeting in one of the halls in one of the most secluded sections of town to plan the attack. We considered our options and decided that we could not pounce in on them during the meeting. If we arrested the terrorists during the planning phase, we could not capture the explosives and the attack would happen eventually. The only option was to plant a transmitter in the house before the meeting and retrieve it after the terrorists left.
The house was highly guarded during the day and hence no one could plant a transmitter. That is when I remembered that as I had a toy electric battery powered RC helicopter. We attached a transmitter to the RC chopper and flew the noiseless chopper into the house through the huge ventilations. During the meeting, we heard everything, including the source, route, and destination of the explosives.
We were able to intercept the explosives, arrest the terrorist, and even raid the source. We stopped a potentially huge attack that could have resulted in massive loss of lives using a toy RC helicopter. That is why I still appreciate this marvelous invention to date.
